My son is a highly sensitive child (HSC) and was able to relate to this story in every way. He is very much like the main character when we go to parties and gets overwhelmed. I bought it to keep at my house for my grandchildren who come to visit often, but while reading it, it completely took me back to my own childhood. I hated birthday parties, too, and I would've given anything to know that it was okay and that there was someone...anyone...who understood how difficult it was to be there. The story is perfect, and the illustrations are soft and sweet. I love how Lucas doesn't feel alone with his anxiety and then works it out perfectly in the end. If only I had realized sooner my highly sensitive kiddos are highly sensitive kiddos. Forcing them constantly to do things they really didn’t want to do because of worrying about what others thought and doing what was “right”. My boys aren’t difficult. They are sensitive. And we need the sensitive people. This book is for the parents too! I hope we start to see more books like this to support parents of Highly Sensitive Children! It really is a must have for any type of classroom and also to have at home to help your child understand how we all experience life a little differently. Spot on about all the problems with parties many shy children, or those with sensory difficulties, experience. It's so important for children to see themselves represented in books and culture, to normalise how they feel; it's something I myself always lacked as a child and I love that the book addresses that. The drawing style is really cute too, nice and soft. I'd argue this book should be read not only by shy children but for others too, to promote empathy and acceptance of others with these needs too.
